When visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina, enjoy private, 2-hour surf lessons. The lesson involves the individual plus family and/or friends in a private setting with the instructors. Private lessons guarantee a 2-to-1 maximum student-to-instructor ratio. No other surf school offers this level of safety and personal attention. The NSSIA-certified surf instruction course includes etiquette, water safety, board safety, basics of paddling, basics of riding, plus at least 90 minutes of wave catching and riding.

This private surf lesson meets at a centrally located shop in Nags Head. Park in the shop's lot and leave the car keys behind the counter with a staff member so belongings remain safe. After meeting the surf instructor(s), he/she will help the sign-in process for the class and get suited up in a wetsuit (if necessary). After suiting up, the instructor will select the proper surfboards for everyone involved. Afterwards, head across the road to the beach in Nags Head.

From there, the instructor will provide an overview of the lesson. He/she will lead through the surf school's 'Practice Safe Surf' safety protocols, help with some stretching exercises, and give an on-beach demonstration of proper paddling and standing-up techniques. After the demonstration, try some paddling and popping up skills for the instructor, who will offer tips and pointers to help through the process. At this point, it time to head into the water.

Upon hitting the water, the instructor will help students on to their boards to start paddling. Head out to the 'line up' where the instructor will help each person individually catch their own waves. The process includes helping the student identify good waves, when to start paddling for a wave, the proper way to line up the wave, and of course, when to pop up after catching the wave. If help is needed getting back out, the instructor will be there to help.

Overall, get about 90-minutes of surfing and a lifetime worth of great memories.

Some great site seeing is available heading north or south from the shop.  You can cruise north on a designated bike path to visit the Wright Memorial, a National Park celebrating the first manned flight in history.  Leaving the Wright Brothers Monument heading west down Colington Road, you can follow a designated bike path through some maritime woods to First Street in Kill Devil Hills.  This leisurely, flat ride meanders north to Bay Drive which fronts the Croatan Sound.  Stop at the Dock Street boat ramp and watch the boats come and go.  You can retrace your path to return to the shop.

Heading south from the shop, the bike bath runs for 11 miles all the way to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  En route, you will pass three iconic piers, The Nags Head Fishing Pier, Jennette's Pier--which has an on site aquarium--and The Outer Banks Fishing Pier which has a lively deck scene.  Between Nags Head and Jennette's Piers you will pass by Jockey's Ridge State Park, home of the largest sand dune on the East Coast.  Head to the Park Headquarters by turning west on Hollowell St.  Climb the dunes if you are up to the challenge!  At the terminus of the bike path south of Outer Banks Pier, you can cross Hwy 12 and see Bodie (locals pronounce it like "body") Island lighthouse, which still warns passing ocean going vessels of the hazards of the Outer Banks!

Once at the site, your guide will give you an overview of the Eco Tour. At this point, it time to head into the water!

One of the most popular destinations for the ECO Tour is the Roanoke Island Festival Park Tour.  This tour starts in the north end of Shallowbag Bay, in the heart of "downtown" Manteo at the Manteo Mariner's Museum.  The Tour takes you south, directly next to the famous "Marsh's Light" lighthouse and then bends around the lighthouse west and north into Dough Creek.  Immediately to your left will be Manteo Waterfont Marina, and across the creek is Elizabeth II, a perfect replica of one of the 7 merchant vessels which landed in coastal North Carolina in 1585 and founded the ill fated "Lost Colony".  You are paddling in those historical waters.  As you paddle north deeper into the creek, you have the opportunity to see Osprey's, turtles, fish, crabs, rays and more.  Once you reach the marshy edge of the creek, paddlers will head east into the sound using a cut through the marsh.  Once in the sound, paddlers will turn back south, head around Roanoke Island Festival Park and back towards Marsh's Light and the entry/exit point of the tour.
Over all, expect an hour and a half of paddling, and about a half an hour of driving.  Bring plenty of sunblock, a water bottle and a sun hat.
